Sears to End Discover Card Payments

Posted by Scott Stone on Jul 1, 2014 1:56:27 PM

Since Discover was founded in 1985 you've been able to pay your bill in person through its fouder, Sears. The iconic American brand that's seen better days will discontinue Walk-in Cash Payments to Discover Cards today - July 1st 2014.

According to the Discover Card website...

"Effective July 1, 2014, Discover cardmembers will no longer be able to make payments to their Discover account with cash, cashier's checks or money orders at Sears locations. Cardmembers may still make payments towards their Discover account via personal check at Sears locations, online at www.discover.com, by mailing us a personal check, cashier's check or money order, calling us at 1-800-DISCOVER (1-800-347-2683), or by sending us a cash payment from any Western Union location. Please note, additional fees may be charged by Western Union or the business issuing your money order or cashier's check."

For almost 30 years cardholders have been able to pay their Discover Card bill with cash at Sears. This sudden change could put cash preferred, underserved, underbanked or as we like to say, self-banked Discover Card members in a bit of a bind when they need to make a payment.

Discover Card payment options are limited. One option is to send in a personal check:

Payment Address: Discover Financial Services
P.O. Box 6103
Carol Stream, IL 60197-6103Note: Please remember to always pay with a personal check...Please write your account number on the "memo" line, and to avoid late fees, always allow 7—10 days for your payment to reach us.

7-10 business days reduces the card's utility. Also, cardholders can no longer send a cashier's check or a money order to pay their bill. What if Discover Card members need to make a payment that posts quickly and/or with cash?

Fuze Network has a solution for Discover Card Members. They can pay in cash at any one of our retail parter locations. Payments post the next day! All you have to do is swipe your card and pay the cashier. Here at Fuze we believe everyone should have the ability to add cash to any card wherever and whenever they like. For many cardholders the reason they choose a particular card is convenience, and with this sudden change in Discover Card's payment policy, Fuze can provide that convenience.

Posted by Courtney Packer on Jun 10, 2014 8:00:00 AM

Let's say I need to make a payment on my bill today but in my wallet I only have a credit card, prepaid card, and cash. I have a bit of a dilemma, I don't use any bank services, no bank account, and no checks. What are my options?  Where can I go to make a payment?

There are many others out there who find themselves in this same situation of being "self-banked". More than 35 million consumers choose not to establish a checking or savings account with financial institutions. Even more consumers – upwards of 50 million – use prepaid cards to manage their finances. While these consumers do not engage in traditional banking activities, many rely on the convenience and protection of credit cards and prepaid cards.

One hindrance to self-banked consumers using plastic has been the expensive, time-consuming challenge of paying bills without a checking account or reloading prepaid cards. Fuze Network has a solution for that problem.

Pay-Load Any Card Solution provides immediate access to available credit for First PREMIER Bank cardholders.

In December of 2012 Fuze enabled swipe-based walk-in cash payments for PREMIER credit cards at a nationwide network of thousands of retailers. The solution moved the transaction from the Money Center or customer service counter to the regular checkout lane to mirror the process of reloading a prepaid debit card.

  • Cardholders present their credit card at the register and request to put cash on it.
  • Their card is swiped and their cash payment is given to the store associate.
  • Hand-written forms, special codes, phone calls and other additional steps are not required.
  • The entire transaction takes under 30 seconds and carries an average consumer fee of $3.
  • Retailer's enjoy the ability to transact quickly and easily with existing customer's that may or may not already perform basic fianncial chores like paying bills or cashing checks at their store.

When is a long walk up hill (both ways) through four feet of snow an inconvenience worth accepting?

Short term loans are in high demand and there's a lot of providers.
